How to Add a Page Border in Word 2007

Margins provide a frame for your document; Page Borders can enhance that frame. Here’s how to use them.

Applying a Page Border

  1. Click the Page Layout tab, in the Page Background group click Page Borders to open the Borders and Shading box. Make sure you are on the Page Border tab, not the Borders tab.
  2. Use either a line-type page border under Styles: or look for the Art: section and click the down-arrow to open the list. It’s a fairly long list, you can scroll through to see the graphics available. Click the one you want use apply, it should show on the Preview section on the right of the box.

Ways to Customize the Page Border

  • Style or Art:the border can one of the lines in the Style: section or one of the more graphically enhanced lines in the Art: section.
  • Change the Width: use to make the graphic itself wider or narrower. The width is measured in points and can be between 1 and 31 pts. (A point is 1/72 of an inch, 18 pt would be 1/4 inch, 36 point would be 1/2 inch.)
  • Change the Color: the colored Art borders can’t be changed, but some of the black Art borders can have the color changed, as well as the various line Styles.
  • Apply it Where You Want: the border doesn’t have to be on all four sides of the page. Use the Preview area to control where you want the border by clicking on the buttons or directly on the sides to turn off. On some of the borders, turning off the sides causes the border to extend to the edge of the page. If you need to control that, you could position a solid white text box to cover the amount of the border the margin should hide.
  • What Pages the Border Should Display On: use the list in the Apply to: section to determine which pages the border should appear on. Page Borders can also be controlled with section breaks.
  • Distance Control: the Options button is the only control for how close the page border prints to the edge of the page. You can measure the page border from Text or Page Edge.
  • To Remove a Page Border: While in the page with the border, click the Page Layout tab, in the Page Background group click Page Borders to open the Borders and Shading box. Make sure you are on the Page Border tab, not the Borders tab. In the Preview area, click all sides of the border to be turned off. OK to finish.

Hi Lorraine – when I’ve had that happen, its been because the printer doesn’t print as close to the edge as needed for the bottom border, but I’ve always been able to see that its cut off using Print Preview. So maybe this suggestion won’t be all that helpful. You can adjust how far the borders sit from the edge of the page by going through the Options button that’s in the Page Border box (at the lower right side). You can adjust the Measurements or whether measure from the text or the edge of the page. By playing with those, you might be able to find out if it’s a printer problem or a Word problem.
    Good luck!

    Hi
When I put a page border in Word 2007, I can see the complete border in Print Preview but when I print the document the bottom border does not appear. This happens on all my Word documents, not just a one off. I have played around with the margin but nothing seems to work. Hoping you can help :-)
