How to Fix Landscape Footers in a Mostly Portrait Document
April 17th, 2008 | by Loren |If you’ve inserted a header or footer into a Word document, then made some of the pages in the document landscape, you might find that the header/footer retains it’s layout from the portrait pages, that what should be on the right side isn’t and what should be in the center, isn’t. Here’s how to fix the landscape footer using the ruler:

- Turn off the Link to Previous. If this isn’t turned off, the next steps will change all the footers. If there are pages in the section after the landscape page that don’t need to be changed, then the Link to Previous in that footer should be tuned off, too.
- The middle and right text in headers and footers are controlled by tabs. To make that text correctly aligned to the page, the two tabs need to be moved. (Note the circled tabs in the image.)
- To move the right tab, click and drag the tab to where the right margin starts.
- To move the center tab, click and drag it to the center of the page.

(The images have the paragraph marks turned on, you don’t need them on to make these changes.)

Hi,
I am having a similar problem as Marty. I am finishing my thesis, and they require for all of the headers w/ page numbers in the upper right corner. One of my tables must be in the landscape, but when I do this the header moves to landscape too. How can I get it to be moved back to the portrait?
Thanks!!

Hi Marty – here are some things to look at:
Does it happen on all printers, or just a specific printer? It could be related to the printer, not to Word 2007.
Can you work around the problem by moving in the right side tab to compensate for the page number being in the margin?
To troubleshoot in Word: are there any extra tab characters (the arrow shape) in the footer?
Is the right tab for that position line up with the margin?
On the ruler, does the right side indent line up with the right margin?
Is the right margin set the same as the other pages in the document?
I know that’s not a simple answer, it’s hard to know without seeing the document.
I hope this has helped. You can comment back if you have any other questions.
Good luck, Marty!

I am in the process of finsihing my dissertation. I noticed that when I was ready to send it in for review, the page numbers on some of the pages were not placed correctly when printing.
I had to make some of the pages landscape in order for the tables to fit the page. When I look at them in Word or PDF, they look fine, but when I print the document for binding, the page number is in the right hand margain and not at the bottom. Unfortantely, the university will not publish the document like this.
I am using MS Word 2007 and wanted to know how I can correc the pages?
Thank you in advance.
