How to Create a Keyboard Shortcut to Insert a Section Break in Word 2007
April 2nd, 2008 | by Loren |There is no pre-assigned shortcut key that will insert a section break into a Word document. These directions will show you how to define your own keyboard shortcut for it.
- Click the Office button, then Word Options.
- In the left-hand pane, click Customize.
- At the bottom left of the Customize window, look for Keyboard shortcuts:, click the Customize… button next to it.
- In the Customize Keyboard box, under Categories, scroll down to All Commands (not alpha sorted).
- In the Commands section, scroll down to InsertSectionBreak (it is alpha sorted).
- To create a keyboard shortcut, click in the Press new shortcut key: area, then press the keys you want to use. I used Alt + Ctrl + Enter (Return).
- Click Assign, click Close. Close out of the Word Options window.
Note that the Current keys area is blank, that means it has no shortcut keys assigned to it.
Notice that right underneath the Current keys box, there is a Currently assigned to — this indicates what the keyboard shortcut I just pushed is currently assigned to. This would matter is you want to keep the keys assigned to that command. In this case, it’s not something I use, so I would be willing to re-assign the keys to InsertSectionBreak.
Back in the document, try the keyboard shortcut you just made. (Remember to turn on ¶ to see the section break.)
If you don’t like the keys you assigned, go back to the Customize Keyboard box, select the Category and Command again, then click the Remove button to end the assignment.
