Fine-tune Headers and Footers in Word 2007
April 1st, 2008 | by Loren |Here are a couple additional adjustments you can make to your headers and footers.

Find Them in Two Places
There are two places to make this change from: if you have a header or footer in the document, double-click to activate it, and look for the Header & Footer Tools button at the top of the screen. The Header & Footer Tools only has one tab, the Design tab.

The other way is through the Page Layout tab, in Page Setup group, click the Page Setup dialog box button, and go to the Layout tab.
Adjust The Distance from the Page Edge
With either way, you can adjust the how far the header or footer measures in from the edge of the page.

In the Headers & Footers tab, Design tab, the distance change is in the Position group. If you increase the distance of the header or footer from the edge of the page, make sure your margins are still inside that measurement. For example, if you change your footer from 0.5” from the page edge to 1”, but leave your margin at 1” from the same page edge, there wouldn’t be any visual space between the footer and body of the document.
Different First Page, Odd & Even Pages
The same place (Design tab or Page Setup box) you can also set whether you want a different first page, for example if your first page is a title page, and you don’t want the header/footer showing.
You can also set if you want a different header or footer on the odd and even pages, which you would use if you were printing front and back and having the document bound. The facing pages would have different header and footers.

Hi Janice – here’s a couple options:
Use a hyperlink to the original document instead, a hyperlink won’t change when you email it. Look at this article for more information: Using Hyperlinks in Word 2007 Documents.
The filename + path changes because it will reflect where the file is after it is emailed. It you want to convert the filename + path field to text, select it and push Ctrl + Shift + F9.
Neither of those are very quick, but they could work.

In footer I have added the file name & path, but when the document is emailed it changes. How can you make it not change so anyone can find the document?

Hi Nancy – depending if the text you want to insert in the header or footer is from the document page, you might be able to do it this way: How to Add Any Document Text to a Header or Footer in Word 2007 or How to Cross Reference a Heading in Word 2007.
If it is text that is unique to each header or footer, then you need to insert section breaks and turn off the Link to Previous option. You can see directions on how to do that here (even though the project objective is different): How to Fix Landscape Footers in a Mostly Portrait Document.
Good luck with your dissertation!

I need to place different material in headers and footers on EACH PAGE of a document. When I try to edit a header or footer, it puts the same information on every page. Is there any way around this? I am trying to submit a doctoral dissertation to the committee for review, and I can’t get this done. It is required for my submission. If anyone could help I’d be grateful.
