Center a Page Vertically in Word 2007

March 31st, 2008 | by Loren |

If you’re making a sign or inserting a table, you might want it to be centered from top to bottom on the page. Rather than pushing the Enter key to try to do that, Word can do it automatically for you.

Steps to Center a Page Vertically

  1. From anywhere on the page, click Page Layout.
  2. In the Page Setup group, click the dialog box button.
  3. Click the Layout tab.
  4. In the Page section, click the down arrow to the right of Vertical Alignment: and choose Center.
  5. Click OK to finish.

This will position any text or tables you add to the page in the center of the top and bottom margins. This change will affect all pages in your document.

To just have certain pages vertically centered, you would use section breaks to define those pages. For more on using section breaks, see: Word 2007 Practice: How to Make One Page Out of Many Landscape. (You would treat your centered page the same as the landscape page as far as inserting the section breaks. If the centered page was the very first page in a document, like a title page, you would only need a section break between page 1 and page 2.)

    Loren,
Nice article, but it’s for Word 2007. How can I do the same in Word 2008 where there is no “page setup” like the one shown in your article.

Sure – if all you have on the page is the table you want centered, centering the page vertically will center the table.
If you want the table to stay in a specific position (like vertically centered or at the top or bottom of a page)you can do that, too. First, move your cursor anywhere inside the table you want centered.
Look for the Table Tools tab at the top of your Word screen, under it are Design and Layout tabs. Click the Layout tab and click on Properties in the Table group.
In the Table Properties box, in the Table tab, find the Text wrapping section. Set the wrapping to Around. This will activate the Positioning button, click it and in the Positioning box there is a Vertical section. Change the Position and Relative to options to fit your needs. OK to finish.
With the vertical centering turned on for a table, it will stay in position even with adding and deleting text and paragraphs around it.
Hope that helps – thanks for the good question.
