Selective Printing

March 4th, 2008 | by Loren |

This works in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel and other programs.

How often do you see a part of a web page that you’d like to keep so you print it out, and you end up with more pages than what you need printing. How about with a Word document — maybe you just want to print out a few lines for someone else to review, but you don’t need the whole document to print. You can control how much of a web page or document your printer prints by printing a Selection.

This is really a two-step process:

  1. Select what you want to print. Click and drag your mouse over the text you want to print to select it.
  2. Open the Print box, look for the Selection option. Choose it, then click OK to print.

Your printout should be only what you had selected.

Troubleshooting

  • You need to open the Print box to do this, so don’t use Quick Print. You may need to go to File, Print or the Office Button, Print, Print.
  • It can be difficult to select just what you want on some web pages. You might have to settle to getting more than you really want, but you can still get less than you would without selecting.
  • If you don’t see the Selection option, or it is grayed out, it just means nothing was selected when you went to print. Cancel the Print box, try selecting again.
