The Ruler: Margins and Indents and Tabs in Word 2007, Part 2

Margins

The margin is the white space that frames your document. There are four margins that can be potentially changed: top, bottom, left, and right.

Margins and the Ruler

By using the ruler to change the margins you must change each margin separately by dragging the margin indicator on the ruler. The top and bottom margin can be changed with the left-side ruler, the left and right margin with the top ruler. The margin is marked by line where the color changes on the ruler; the margin is shaded and the document area is white.
The problem with changing the left and right margins is getting the mouse pointer in exactly the right place, so that the margin is being dragged, not the indent markers. When your pointer is in the correct place to move the margin, it’s indicated by the pointer shape changing to a two-headed arrow.

Tip: If you hold the Alt key while dragging the margin, Word will display the measurement of the margin.

Margins and the Ribbon

The other way to change the margins is by clicking the Page Layout tab, and using the Margins button in the Page Setup group. There are six pre-set margins and Custom Margins allows you to manually change the margins, set the default margins and add a gutter. The gutter is used to allow space for binding the document.
