Customize Word 2007: Quick Access Toolbar
February 10th, 2008 | by Loren |The one thing that new users to Word 2007 complain about is how long it took them to figure out where to go to do the basic stuff, like starting a new document, saving or printing. This is an exercise to bring those basic commands into your sight, rather than keep them hidden in the Office button. To do this you will customize the Quick Access Toolbar, that little toolbar at the top left of your Word screen, next to the Office button. It comes with Save, Undo, and Repeat already on it, we’ll add New, Open, Close, Print and Spell Check to it.
- Add New: Left-click on the little arrow to the right of the Quick Access Toolbar. Click New.
- Add Open: Left-click on the little arrow to the right of the Quick Access Toolbar. Click Open.
- Add Close: Left-click to open the Office button menu, then right-click on Close (at the very bottom of the list), then choose Add to Quick Access Toolbar.
- Add Quick Print: Left-click on the little arrow to the right of the Quick Access Toolbar. Click Quick Print.
- Add Spell Check: Left-click on the little arrow to the right of the Quick Access Toolbar. Click Spelling & Grammar.
Quick Print sends the document you’re working on to the default printer. If you typically need to print to another printer, print more than one copy, or print specific pages, you may want to add the Print command instead. To add Print: Left-click to open the Office button menu, then left-click on Print, then right-click on Print and choose Add to Quick Access Toolbar.
To arrange what’s been added, or to add additional commands:
Left-click on the little arrow to the right of the Quick Access Toolbar. Click More Commands. In the Word Options box that opens, there are three columns:
- To arrange your commands use the right-hand column. Select the command to move, then use the arrows to the right to move it up or down.
- The middle column holds additional commands that could be added, with categories of commands above it. The Separator is the first command in the Popular Commands.
- The left-hand column is the different Word Option categories.
Now the Quick Access Toolbar should hold your common file actions, plus you know how to customize it to add what you use regularly.
