Word 2007: Section Letters & Restarting Page Numbering
September 23rd, 2008 | by Loren |A question that recently came in through the comments is:
I need to number a Word 2007 document in the following manner
Cover page – no number and I don’t want to use the default Word cover page
Section A….i, ii, iii, iv etc
Section B Page 1 of 55
I can do most of this but in section B it numbers 1 to 63. i.e. it includes the title page and section a pages.
How can I sort this out
All the best
Neal
Here’s a way to set up the page numbering to include a section letter plus page numbers, and how to restart the numbering in the second section.
Add the Section Breaks
For the section lettering to work, the document will need section breaks inserted between the A and B sections. To insert a next page section break, go to the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Breaks, then under Section Breaks choose Next Page. This should be inserted at the very end of the first section, and will force the first page of the second section. If there is already a standard page break inserted, turn on your Show/Hide Paragraph marks to delete the correct code. See How to Find and Remove Section Breaks for more on section breaks.
Insert the Section A, B, C and Page i, ii, iii
- In the header or footer, go to the Insert tab, Text group, click Quick Parts, then Field. Set the Categories to All, and scroll through the list to find Section. Select the style, for this example the A, B, C style will work.
- Click OK to insert, then push the spacebar once.
- Go back to the Insert tab, Text group, Quick Parts, Fields. The Categories should still be All, and scroll through the list to find Page. Select the i, ii, iii style.
- OK to insert.
Changing the Number Style for the Next Section

- Move to the B section footer. In the Header & Footer Tools, Design tab, Navigation group you can use the Previous Section and Next Section buttons to move around.
- Select and delete the numeric page number, leaving the section letter.
- In the Header & Footer Tools, Design tab, you can insert a standard page number through the Header & Footer group, Page Number, Current Position, Plain Number. (You could also insert it though the Quick Parts, Field menu, too)
- Still in the Header & Footer Tools, Design tab, in the Navigation group turn off the Link to Previous.
- To restart the numbering at 1, go back to Page Number and choose Format Page Number. Turn off the Continue from previous section option and set the Start at to 1.
Note: If you don’t want your document to include the title page in the numbering, use this same technique to set the first section page numbering to start at 0, so it will appear that the page after the title page is the first. - OK to finish.

Hi – has anyone noticed that word 2007 is adding an END of section break into certain documents.
Does anyone know where that comes from and how to stop it to go back to just a normal section break next page?
I can’t figure out where it is coming from. i run a macro to insert a section break next page and then I sometimes (only sometimes) get end of section – i have never seen that before.
please help – it is messing up my documents
thanks so much
Sue

Hi, I have a Table of Contents which is 3 pages long. Therefore, I would like to start the page numbering on the 4th page. I added a Section Break, I inserted a page number field but it only shows on the first page. Is there a step that I am missing? Thanks in advance for your help!

Ok, that works great, but I also want to restart paragraph numbers after each section, and I can’t get word to do this. Any suggestions?
