Get More Control when Dragging and Dropping Files
February 5th, 2008 | by Loren |Dragging and dropping files to move them from or onto a USB drive or from folder to folder is not hard to do. You can control whether you move, copy, or create a shortcut, by holding the following keys at any time while dragging, but before you release the mouse button:
Ctrl – copies whatever is dragged; indicated by plus symbol on item while dragging
Shift – moves whatever is dragged; there will be no symbol on item while dragging
Alt – creates a shortcut to whatever is dragged; indicated by shortcut arrow symbol on item while dragging
Windows will always copy file from or onto removable storage, and will always move files from folder to folder within a hard drive or removable source. These key controls give additional control over working with files.
Note: these actions can also be controlled by right-clicking and dragging files.
