Control Header and Footer Spacing in Word 2007

July 14th, 2008 | by Loren |

This is about the way to control the distance of the header or footer from the edge of the page and how to control the distance between the header or footer and the body of the document.

You can control the amount of space between the edge of the page and a header or footer by using the Distance from option in the Header & Footer Tools, Design tab, Position group. This will change the space between the header or footer and the edge of the page, but can push the header or footer too close to the body of the document.

Spacing from the body of the document and the header or footer can be controlled by selecting the header or footer, and using Paragraph Spacing. For a header, use the Add Space After Paragraph, and for a footer use the Add Space Before Paragraph. They are both found in the Home tab, Paragraph group, in the Line Spacing button. They will both set a 12 pt space by default. (12 pt is equivalent to height of one line of 12 pt font text.) To set a custom distance, in the Line Spacing button, click Line Spacing Options… and in the Spacing section, set the Before or After to what works for you.
