Use the Alignment Tab to Simplify and Fix Headers and Footers in Word 2007
June 30th, 2008 | by Loren |
An Alignment Tab is a way to fix the problem of a document’s margins changing, but the header and footer margins not changing.
The Alignment Tab is found in the Header & Footer Tools, Design tab, Position group. To use it, move into a header or footer, click the Alignment Tab button to open the Alignment Tab box. Choose left, center or right, then OK to finish. The cursor will move to the center or the right, then you insert the page numbering or text you want in the position. There is no need to use the tab key when using the Alignment Tab. The original tabs for center and right will still show on the ruler, but they can be removed. The Alignment Tab can also be used to create a header or footer that would be saved as a building block, and can be saved as part of a template.

Details about the Alignment Tab
- Once set, it doesn’t show on the ruler like a standard tab does.
- It can be set to align to an indent or a margin.
- You can use it to set left, center and right all on one line.
- It does allow a document to change page orientation from portrait to landscape and back without needing to fix the tabs in the headers and footers.
- The Leader section allows you to add a string of characters, like dashes or periods, between the Alignment Tabs.
- There is no keyboard shortcut for the Alignment Tab, but it could be added to the Quick Access Toolbar.
