How to Assign a Shortcut Key to a Symbol in Word 2007
June 17th, 2008 | by Loren |Here’s how to create a keyboard shortcut that will insert a symbol.

- In the Insert tab, Symbols group, click Symbol, then More Symbols…
- In the Symbol box, choose the Font: that the symbol is from (like Symbol or Wingdings). Find the symbol you want to use and single click to select it. Note that at the bottom of the Symbol box there is a Shortcut key: area, it will show you here if there is already a shortcut for the particular symbol you selected.
- Click the Shortcut Key… button.
- The Customize Keyboard box will open. Verify that Symbol: area displays the symbol you wanted to use.
- Press the shortcut keys you want to use for the symbol — they should show in the Press new shortcut key: box. Check that keys shown in the Currently assigned to: area are not something you are likely to need or want to use.
- Click Assign to assign your shortcut keys to your symbol.
- Click Close in the Customize Keyboard box.
- Click Close in the Symbol box.

Test your new keyboard shortcut to see that it works!

I have the same problem Nick Barber had. When I try to type in shortcuts for symbols, the “assign” button is greyed out and I can only type certain function keys (like “insert” or “delete” or F2) into the “Press new shortcut key” box. Can anyone help with this? I would like to assign “alt + s” for the section symbol.

The Shortcut key for creating shortcuts to symbols is greyed out (Word 2007 SP2) so i (administrator) cannot edit the shortcuts. Anyone know how i can activate the keyboard shortcuts dialog?
