Working with Themes in Word 2007
June 12th, 2008 | by Loren |Themes (found in the Page Layout tab, Themes group) allow you to apply a consistent look to Word documents, and to easily change the overall look if needed. Word 2007 comes with a variety of themes, extra themes can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site, and you can create your own custom themes.
Themes can affect:

- background and text colors (4 text and background colors, 6 accent colors, 2 hyperlink colors)
- a font for body style and a font for heading styles
- lines and fill effects (these cannot be customized, but a pre-made set of effects can be added to a custom-made theme)
Themes and Styles are closely connected in Word: the menu for Color sets and Font sets appear in the Style group (Home tab) as well as the Theme group. To change the default theme, you would change the Color and Font sets, and use the Set as default option in the Change Styles button.
To Apply a Theme
From anywhere in the document, in the Page Layout tab, Themes group, click the Themes button, then click the theme to apply.
How to Create a Custom Font or Color Set
- In the Themes group, click either Colors or Fonts, then click Create New Theme Colors (or Fonts).
- Choose the colors or fonts you want to use, give the set a Name, click Save to finish.
- A Custom section will now appear in the Font or Color menu, where the saved font or color sets will appear.
- Right-click a Custom font or color set to delete or edit it.

How to Create a Custom Theme
- Apply the Font set, Color set, and Effects set that you want to save as a theme to the current document.
- Click the Themes button, then click Save Current Theme. Give it a name, click Save to finish. A new Custom section will show in the Themes menu, any themes you create will show up there.
- To delete a theme, right-click on it in the Themes menu, then choose Delete and confirm.

Hi Joshua – basically a theme can affects an entire document, title, paragraphs and more. A style is a saved set of formatting for a single element in a document, like a title or subheading.
2. Only one theme can be applied to a document, it would require customizing an existing theme to have the theme have different page layouts. You can use many different styles throughout a document and you can save as many as you want, as long as they have unique names.
Here’s some more info on styles: Basic Steps to Saving a Style in Word 2007.
Good luck!

1. What is the difference between theme and style?
2. Is there a way to use different style or theme for different pages in the same document?
