Continuing Numbered Lists in Word 2007

May 20th, 2008 | by Loren |

Creating numbered lists in Word is terrifically easy; click the Numbering button, start typing the list, Word automatically numbers each item after you push Enter, push Enter twice (or click the Numbering button) to stop numbering.

But, you may occasionally need to create lists where the numbering needs to continue after being interrupted by other content. Word has ways to let you continue a numbered list. Here they are:

Type in the Next Number

Continue the numbered list by typing in the next number in the sequence. Word will automatically start re-numbering the list.

Click the Numbering Button

At the position where the numbering should re-start, click the Numbering button. If it defaults back to 1., right-click and choose Continue Numbering.

Pick Your Number

In the right-click menu there is also a Set Numbering Value option. Use this to start a new numbered list, continue numbering from the previous list or choose what the next number in your sequence should be.

Use the Paste Options

If you need to copy and paste part of your list, you can continue numbering through the Paste Options in the AutoCorrect pop-up.
