Shortcut Keys for Tables in Word 2007

May 16th, 2008 | by Loren |

Word doesn’t come with too many predefined keyboard shortcuts for working with tables. Here they are:

Select Table = Alt + Clear (Keypad 5, turn off Num Lock)

Move to Top of Column, End of Column = Alt + Page Up or Alt + Page Down

Move to Beginning of Row, End of Row = Alt + Home or Alt + End

Select from Current Cell to End of Row = Alt + Shift + End

Select from Current Cell to End of Column = Alt + Shift + Page Down

You were probably hoping for some shortcuts that would let you delete or insert rows or columns. Sometimes you’ve got to do it yourself.

Create a Keyboard Shortcut to Insert a Row

  1. Start with a Word document with a table inserted, and the cursor in the table. Click Table Tools, then the Layout tab.
  2. Push Ctrl + Alt + Plus on keypad. Mouse will change to clover-type shape.
  3. In the Layout tab, in the Rows & Columns group, click the Insert Above button.
  4. The Customize Keyboard box will open.
  5. The Commands: section shows what action the new keyboard shortcut will do.
  6. Take a look at the Current keys: box to verify that there is no keyboard shortcut for the command.
  7. Push the keys you want to use to insert a row, like Alt + Ctrl + R. The keys you push will show in the Press new shortcut key: box. (Use backspace to clear the box if you push the wrong keys.)
  8. The Currently assigned to: line shows what those keys will do now (in this case, the registered symbol). If you don’t mind not using the keys for that anymore, click Assign to use the shortcut for the insert row command.
  9. That’s it, click Close and go back and test it in the table.

Follow the same steps for any other commands you want to use shortcut keys for.

It’s tips like these that make me oh so happy. I had no idea 2007 had a “create your own shortcut” feature.

Hi Mike – as far as the underlined letters in the menus, you can just use the letter by itself.
To get to the Table menu from the keyboard, press Alt (you should see letters pop up by all menus), then N (for Insert), then T (for Table).
The Alt will also show the shortcuts for the Table Tools menus.
    Hope that helps!

All I want to know is how to use the existing shortcut keys. They’re showing in the menus but they don’t tell what the key combination is. For example, to add a row below a table, there is an underscore B in Insert Below, but nothing tells how to use this shortcut. I have tried every combination of Alt, Ctrl, Shift, etc. Typical Bill Gates garbage for you.
